On the morning of May 10th, Dean Tjosvold, honorary professor of HongKong Lingnan University, and Alfred Wong, head of Management Department, gave lectures at our school. The topics were “The Value of Conflict” and “Conflict Management for International Joint Venture Effectiveness”. The seminar was held in the room 704 Gongshang Building on MaiLu Campus. Prof. Jie Yang, director of the ISHRM, chaired the seminar and many professors and students attended the lecture.

Alfred Wong shared a newest research of his team. Discussed the mechanisms to manage conflicts that occur when organizations with different cultures, habits and experiences try to coordinate effectively in international joint ventures (IJV). He proposed that partners can promote their joint venture performance to the extent that they rely on cooperative rather than competitive conflict management, and further hypothesizes that adopting collectivist values strengthens relationships and thereby provides a foundation for cooperative conflict management. During this period, the teachers and students present have conducted extensive in-depth discussions on the relevant topics, which helped to have a better understanding of conflict management.

Dean Tjosvold used the question “whether the conflict was constructive or destructive?” to guide people into the topic. The teachers and students present were divided into groups and had heated discussions in the form of debates. Finally, Dean Tjosvold summed up everyone's opion about conflict, and then shared his own point of views. The seminar was a complete success.
