On Nov 26th 2011, the International School staged a glittering event in the auditorium of the North campus. This musical extravaganza was the School’s welcome party. Following a month’s preparation and cooporation between 24 departments, and the eager anticipation of more than 2000 students, the event went off with a bang.
The Party began with a burst of energy from a dance scene in the House of the Flying Daggers - sometimes spontaneous and light-hearted, sometimes sad and desolate. A comic dialogue Freaky Freshman, had the house in stitches. Then came the brilliant dance shows — the graceful, rhythmic bodies in white chi-pao and white feather fans; the handsome dancers in black suits and bowlers; the naïve girls falling for the Shy Boy; showing off break-dancing and Michael Jackson’s legendary moonwalk; and the energetic steps in High Dream. The Costume play, with the pretty servant girls, the stony-hearted killers and the legendary swordsman, was no doubt a visual feast for the ACG lovers. There was romance in the rain in I love you, Forever and Ever; once upon a time we met, but now It isn’t you who Take Me Home. Following these nostalgic melodies, the stage play The Sound of China, with its flowing, classical tunes and rousing sounds, gave the audience a great treat in traditional Chinese culture. Then with the comedy sketch Recruit, the atmosphere turned humorous. The hilarious advertising of pork, the bizarre imitating of Miss Gold, and the odd performances of the judges received enthusiastic applause from the audience. The highlight of the evening came, when Yang Hui, the Dean, and Zheng Yun, the secretary of the general Party branch, led all the staff in singing the song “Tomorrow Will Be Better” as a display of sentiments for JUFE.
After a brief interactive activity, the evening’s programme continued. The dynamic music band - Lady Beetle, and members of the pop dance club Summer D gave their best performance. The sitcom Super Mario took us back to yesteryear, of interesting coin-collecting, baddie-busting, and mushroom-eating scenes. Mulan impressed us with women's strong yet feminine qualities; against a glamorous backdrop, our students poured out their hearts with their Song of the International. The liveliest moment of the party arrived, when the Students Union leaders gave a wonderful performance in Love turns around, in which chairman, secretaries, and members of the students union standing committee became the opposite of their usual selves. Their tenderness under the moonlight, and their carefree and cheerful sensual dance got the audience screaming with delight. Next was the affectionate duet 'tear the night', which brought down the house. After that, the audience had a taste of a musical treat from two of the School’s top 10 singers: Mo Heng’s Strut, and Zhou Yixiang’s Down. As the saying goes: 'The national is also international' – the different dances from China’s ethnic minority groups competed with each other, each with their own distinct rhythm and beat. Their unique cultural charm demonstrated China’s wide-ranging and profound culture. The party finally came to an end with the majestic and tuneful song Long Wen.
On such a splendid night, we were caught up in its brilliance, while remembering the efforts we made. In such an internationalised school, we were thankful for her strength, while remembering our dreams. Tonight, we had to let it go reluctantly, but let us make an appointment this day next year. Tomorrow, when the sun rises, we will be on the new starting line.
